NGC 705
NGC 705 is a lenticular galaxy located approximately 235 million light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. It is a member of the Abell 262 galaxy cluster and is classified as an S0 galaxy, indicating a relatively featureless disk structure with a prominent central bulge and little or no ongoing star formation.
Its designation, NGC 705, comes from its listing in the New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars, compiled by John Louis Emil Dreyer in 1888.
Observations of NGC 705 have contributed to studies of galaxy evolution within dense cluster environments, particularly regarding the processes that quench star formation in galaxies as they fall into and interact within clusters. These processes can include ram-pressure stripping (removal of gas by the intracluster medium) and tidal interactions with other galaxies in the cluster. The galaxy's morphology and properties provide valuable insights into how galaxies are shaped and transformed over time due to their interactions within such environments.
