Schieber

A Schieber (plural Schieber) is a German word, historically used to describe a person who profited illegally or unfairly from scarcity or wartime conditions, particularly through black market activities. The term carries a strong negative connotation of opportunism and exploitation.

While its literal translation might relate to "slider" or "pusher," the meaning in this context relates to someone who manipulates the market and prices, particularly during times of crisis like war or economic hardship, to their own personal advantage at the expense of others. They often dealt in goods that were rationed or in short supply, selling them at inflated prices on the black market.

The term was particularly prevalent during and after both World Wars in Germany and Austria, where shortages were widespread. However, the concept of Schiebertum (the practice of being a Schieber) is not limited to these periods or countries and can apply wherever individuals exploit scarcity for personal gain.

The word carries a heavy moral condemnation, associating the Schieber with greed, selfishness, and a lack of social responsibility. It is often linked to profiteering and unethical business practices that undermine the common good, especially in times of national emergency or widespread suffering.

In modern German, the term is less frequently used, but it remains recognizable and retains its negative connotations when referring to someone who engages in unfair or exploitative business practices, especially taking advantage of crises or vulnerable populations.
