Egmont (New Zealand electorate)

Egmont is a former parliamentary electorate in the Taranaki region of New Zealand. It existed from 1861 to 1996, with some boundary adjustments over its lifespan. It was named after Mount Taranaki, also known as Mount Egmont.

The electorate was initially created in 1861 and existed until 1881. It was then re-established in 1890 and continued until 1996, when it was replaced by the Taranaki-King Country electorate following the introduction of mixed-member proportional (MMP) representation.

Historically, Egmont was generally considered a safe seat for conservative parties, particularly the National Party. Its representatives in Parliament included prominent political figures. The boundaries of the electorate varied over time to reflect population changes in the region.

The electorate covered a largely rural area, encompassing farming communities and small towns in the western part of the North Island. The economic activities of the region traditionally centered on agriculture, particularly dairy farming.
