HMAS Huon (naval base)
HMAS Huon is a former Royal Australian Navy (RAN) shore establishment located in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It was commissioned as a naval base on 1 September 1911. Its primary function was to serve as a training depot and administrative centre for the RAN presence in Tasmania. The base was named after the Huon River, a major waterway in southern Tasmania.
Throughout its history, HMAS Huon provided various services, including recruitment, training of naval reservists, and administrative support for naval activities in the region. During both World Wars, HMAS Huon played a vital role in coordinating naval operations in the waters around Tasmania.
The establishment underwent several periods of expansion and contraction, reflecting changes in the size and structure of the RAN. In later years, its role diminished as naval activity in Tasmania decreased.
HMAS Huon was decommissioned on 14 December 1994. The land and buildings were subsequently transferred to other uses. The name HMAS Huon was later reused for a class of minehunter coastal ships built for the RAN. The historical significance of the former naval base is remembered through commemorative markers and historical records. The legacy of HMAS Huon remains an important part of Tasmania's maritime history and its contribution to the Royal Australian Navy.
