Dunja, du

Dunja is a Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian word meaning quince ( Cydonia oblonga). The term is used to refer to the fruit itself, the quince tree, and products made from the fruit, such as quince jam ( slatko od dunja), quince cheese ( kitnkes - in Jewish communities, or sir od dunja in Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian), and quince brandy (dunjevača). The fruit is traditionally used in these regions for preserving and flavoring, often associated with autumn harvests. Quince is not typically eaten raw in these areas due to its astringency.

Du is a shortened, informal, and familiar form of the second-person singular pronoun "you" in German. It is equivalent to the English "thou," but unlike "thou," is still in common use. Its use is governed by social etiquette and generally reserved for addressing family members, close friends, children, and animals. Using "du" with someone one does not know well or who is in a position of authority can be considered impolite. The formal "you" in German is "Sie."
