Parvaz Homay
Parvaz Homay (Persian: پرواز همای), born Saeed Jafarizadeh (سعید جعفریزاده) in 1979 in Shirinabad, Gilan Province, Iran, is an Iranian composer, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist known for his fusion of traditional Persian music with contemporary and Western influences. He is the founder and leader of the Mastaan Ensemble, with whom he has released several albums and performed extensively.
Homay's music often features socially conscious lyrics that address themes of injustice, inequality, and freedom of expression. His theatrical performances are known for their elaborate stage design and incorporation of poetry, dance, and visual elements. He frequently draws inspiration from classical Persian literature, particularly the works of poets like Rumi, Hafez, and Khayyam.
Homay's musical style can be described as a blend of traditional Persian classical music, folk music from the Gilan region of Iran, and elements of opera and Western classical music. He is known for his powerful vocals and his use of traditional Persian instruments such as the setar, oud, and kamancheh, as well as Western instruments like the piano and violin.
Due to the often critical and politically charged nature of his lyrics, Homay has faced censorship and challenges in performing in Iran. He has spent periods living and working abroad, continuing to create and perform his music for audiences around the world. His work has garnered both critical acclaim and controversy within Iran and the broader Iranian diaspora.
