Popular Unity Party (Portugal)
The Popular Unity Party (Portuguese: Partido Unidade Popular, PUP) is a minor Portuguese political party of Marxist-Leninist orientation. Founded in 2014, it emerged from a split within the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP).
The PUP advocates for a socialist transformation of Portugal, defending national sovereignty and denouncing what it sees as the detrimental effects of European Union membership and globalization. Its core policies include advocating for a nationalized economy, strengthening workers' rights, and withdrawing Portugal from NATO.
The party has historically struggled to gain significant electoral support. It has participated in legislative elections but has not secured any seats in the Assembly of the Republic. The PUP primarily focuses on grassroots activism and promoting its political agenda through publications and public demonstrations. It often aligns itself with other left-wing and anti-capitalist groups in Portugal.
