Upotte!!
Upotte!! (うぽって!!) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kitsune Tennouji. It was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace magazine between 2009 and 2021. The manga was adapted into an original net animation (ONA) series by XEBEC which aired in 2012.
The series anthropomorphizes firearms, primarily assault rifles, as young girls attending a special school. These girls, known as "arms girls," represent different models and variants of weapons. The story follows these girls as they learn about combat and interact with each other, often incorporating historical and technical details about their real-life counterparts. The "school" setting serves as a vehicle for exploring these girls' personalities, relationships, and the quirks of their respective weapons.
Key elements of the series include:
- Weapon Anthropomorphism: The central concept of representing firearms as young female characters.
- Guns as Characters: Each "arms girl" embodies the characteristics and history of her corresponding weapon.
- School Setting: The school environment provides a framework for character interactions, comedic situations, and educational elements about firearms.
- Historical References: The story incorporates historical information and trivia related to the firearms represented.
- Humor and Fan Service: The series blends humor with elements of fan service, typical of moe anime and manga.
