Suevite

Suevite is a type of impactite, a rock composed of material ejected during a meteorite impact event. It is characterized by its brecciated texture, meaning it is made up of angular fragments of different rock types cemented together. The key feature that distinguishes suevite from other impact breccias is the presence of glassy or partially melted components called "impact melt," sometimes in the form of bombs or shards. These impact melt components are formed from the extreme heat generated during the impact.

Suevite typically forms closer to the impact crater rim than other impact breccias. The specific composition of suevite varies depending on the target rocks that were impacted. Common components include shocked quartz, feldspar, and other minerals from the pre-impact bedrock, as well as impact melt clasts and rock fragments that were incorporated into the ejected material. The matrix holding these components together can be fine-grained and may include recrystallized material.

The presence of suevite is strong evidence of a hypervelocity impact event. It provides valuable information about the nature of the impactor, the target rocks, and the physical conditions during the impact. Studies of suevite can help determine the size and age of impact structures.

Notable occurrences of suevite include the Ries crater in Germany, where it is a common rock type. Suevite has also been found at other impact sites around the world.
