Preloka

Preloka is a term used within certain esoteric and occult traditions, primarily those drawing from Theosophy and related Western esoteric currents, to denote a specific astral or subtle plane of existence. It is often described as an intermediate state between physical death and the subsequent rebirth or further progression into higher planes of consciousness.

In this context, Preloka is not considered a permanent destination but rather a temporary holding place. Souls, after shedding the physical body, are believed to reside in Preloka for a period of time. The length of stay varies depending on the individual's karma, spiritual development, and the strength of their attachments to the material world.

During their time in Preloka, individuals are thought to undergo a process of reviewing their past life, assimilating experiences, and detaching from earthly concerns. This process is said to be crucial for preparing the soul for its next stage of evolution, whether it be reincarnation or advancement to more refined levels of existence.

Different schools of thought within Theosophy and related traditions offer varying interpretations of Preloka. Some emphasize its role as a purgatorial space, while others highlight its function as a learning and transitional environment. Despite these differences, the core concept remains consistent: Preloka is a temporary state of existence between death and further spiritual progression. The conditions experienced within Preloka are often believed to be influenced by the thoughts, desires, and actions of the individual during their previous life.
