Arrow Peak (California)

Arrow Peak is a prominent mountain peak located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California, within the John Muir Wilderness. It is situated in Fresno County, approximately 15 miles west of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States.

Arrow Peak is known for its distinctive, sharply pointed shape, resembling an arrowhead, from which it derives its name. It is a popular destination for experienced mountaineers and climbers due to its challenging terrain and stunning views of the surrounding wilderness.

The peak consists primarily of granite rock and is part of the Palisades, a group of dramatic, high-elevation peaks. It is often climbed in conjunction with other nearby peaks. Access to Arrow Peak typically requires a multi-day backpacking trip through rugged terrain. Common approaches involve routes from Bishop Pass or Big Pine Canyon.

The area surrounding Arrow Peak is characterized by alpine meadows, granite canyons, and numerous lakes. The climate is harsh, with short summers and long, cold winters. Snowfall is significant at higher elevations, often persisting well into the summer months.

The first recorded ascent of Arrow Peak is attributed to Norman Clyde in 1928.
