Smilin' Through (1922 film)
Smilin' Through is a 1922 American silent romantic drama film directed by Sidney Franklin. It stars Norma Talmadge, Harrison Ford, and Wyndham Standing. The film is based on the 1919 play of the same name by Jane Cowl and Jane Murfin, which was a popular stage production.
The film tells the story of Sir John Carteret (Standing), a man who raises his orphaned niece, Kathleen (Talmadge), after her parents are killed on their wedding day by a jealous suitor, Jeremy Wayne (Ford). Years later, Kathleen falls in love with Kenneth Wayne (Ford again), Jeremy's nephew, which reawakens Sir John's old animosity and threatens to repeat the past. The narrative spans several years and deals with themes of love, loss, forgiveness, and the enduring power of memory.
The 1922 Smilin' Through was a major box office success for Norma Talmadge and was known for its sentimentality and lush production values. It was remade twice, in 1932 with Norma Shearer and in 1941 with Jeanette MacDonald. The 1922 version is considered lost, with no known prints surviving.
