Camp 4 (Yosemite)

Camp 4, also known as Sunnyside Campground, is a walk-in campground located in Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California. It is renowned as a historical and internationally significant gathering place for rock climbers. Its accessibility, affordability, and proximity to world-class climbing routes have made it a central hub for the sport since the mid-20th century.

Camp 4 has a long and storied history, serving as a base camp for legendary climbers who pioneered many of Yosemite's most challenging ascents. It is intimately linked with the "Stone Masters" era of climbing, and the development of big wall climbing techniques. The campground's social atmosphere fostered innovation and the sharing of knowledge within the climbing community.

Due to its popularity and limited space, Camp 4 operates under a lottery system during peak seasons (typically from mid-May to mid-October). Climbers must enter a daily drawing for a campsite. Outside of peak season, campsites are generally available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The National Park Service designated Camp 4 as a National Historic Landmark in 2003, recognizing its profound impact on the history of rock climbing and its cultural significance to the global climbing community. The designation protects the area from development that would detract from its historical character.

Camp 4 offers basic amenities, including restrooms, potable water, and bear-resistant food lockers. There are no showers or hookups available. Fires are permitted only in designated fire rings. The campground is located near the Yosemite Valley Shuttle stop, providing access to other areas within the park.

While primarily associated with rock climbers, Camp 4 is open to all visitors. However, its culture and atmosphere are deeply rooted in the climbing tradition.
