Peter Waterhouse (writer)

Peter Waterhouse (born 1956 in Berlin) is an Austrian writer, translator, and literary critic. He studied German literature, philosophy, and history in Vienna and has lived in Vienna since 1976.

Waterhouse is known for his experimental prose, essays, and radio plays. His writing often explores themes of language, identity, history, and the relationship between Austria and its past. He is considered a significant figure in contemporary Austrian literature.

His works include novels such as Die Auswandernden (The Emigrants), Der Diener des Herrn Karl (The Servant of Mr. Karl), and Republik Österreich. He has also published several collections of essays and shorter prose pieces.

Waterhouse has received numerous awards and fellowships for his work, including the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize (1993), the Austrian State Prize for Literature (2006), and the Elias Canetti Prize of the City of Vienna (2013). He is also a member of the Academy of Arts, Berlin.
