Mac Pro
The Mac Pro is a series of workstation and server computers designed, manufactured, and sold by Apple Inc. It is one of four desktop computers in the current Macintosh lineup, sitting above the Mac Mini, iMac, and Mac Studio in terms of performance and expandability.
Originally introduced in August 2006, the Mac Pro has undergone several redesigns, each characterized by varying internal architectures and component choices. Early models featured Intel Xeon processors and user-expandable RAM and storage, catering to professionals requiring high-performance computing.
The Mac Pro has been used extensively in various fields including video editing, graphic design, scientific research, and software development, where its processing power and expandability are essential.
Subsequent generations saw changes in form factor, including a cylindrical design introduced in 2013 that, while powerful, limited upgradeability. The current Mac Pro, released in 2019, returned to a more traditional tower design, prioritizing modularity and customizability. This model offers a range of configurable options, including different processor configurations, memory capacities, and expansion cards.
A new generation of Mac Pro utilizing Apple silicon was released in 2023. While still offering PCI expansion slots, this version marked a shift towards Apple's own system-on-a-chip architecture, further integrating hardware and software.
The Mac Pro is generally sold as a configure-to-order system, allowing customers to tailor the specifications to meet their specific needs and budget. It is often positioned as a high-end solution for demanding professional workflows.
