Koror (city)
Koror is the former capital and the largest city in Palau. Located on Koror Island, it served as Palau's capital until October 7, 2006, when the capital was officially moved to Ngerulmud. Despite losing its capital status, Koror remains the commercial center of Palau and is the most populous settlement in the nation.
Koror Island is part of the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is connected to other islands in Palau by bridges, including Babeldaob, the largest island in the nation. The city of Koror is the hub for tourism, with hotels, restaurants, and dive shops catering to visitors drawn to Palau's rich marine biodiversity and stunning underwater landscapes.
The population of Koror has varied over the years but consistently represents a significant portion of Palau's total population. As the primary economic center, Koror houses government offices, businesses, and the majority of the country's infrastructure.
The city plays a crucial role in Palau's economy, heavily reliant on tourism, fishing, and some agriculture. Koror’s location and its access to the Rock Islands make it a vital port and transportation hub for the region.
