Dark Fields (2009 film)
Dark Fields is a 2009 thriller film directed by Neil Burger, based on the 2001 novel The Dark Fields by Alan Glynn. The film stars Bradley Cooper, Abbie Cornish, and Robert De Niro.
The film's plot revolves around Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper), a struggling writer in New York City whose life is transformed after he is introduced to a nootropic drug called NZT-48. This experimental drug grants him superhuman intelligence, enhanced memory, and heightened focus. Eddie uses NZT-48 to vastly improve his writing, financial status, and social life.
However, the drug has dangerous side effects and Eddie soon discovers that he is not the only one taking NZT-48. He becomes entangled in a conspiracy involving other users and the powerful forces trying to control the drug. He faces increasing pressure from shadowy figures, violent criminals, and experiences debilitating withdrawal symptoms when he doesn't have access to the drug.
The film explores themes of ambition, the price of success, the ethics of artificial intelligence enhancement, and the potential consequences of unchecked power. It received mixed reviews upon its release, with praise for its performances and visual style, but criticism for its plot inconsistencies. A television series adaptation, Limitless, which served as a sequel to the film, premiered in 2015.
