Grążawy

Grążawy are a type of freshwater aquatic plant belonging to the family Nymphaeaceae, commonly known as water lilies. The term is often used to refer to species within the genus Nuphar, particularly Nuphar lutea, the yellow water-lily.

Characteristics:

  • Floating Leaves: Grążawy are characterized by their large, floating, heart-shaped or oval leaves. These leaves are typically leathery and dark green.
  • Submerged Rhizomes: The plants possess thick, submerged rhizomes (underground stems) that are anchored in the mud or sediment at the bottom of a body of water. These rhizomes serve as a source of nutrients and allow the plant to perennate (survive from year to year).
  • Yellow Flowers: Grążawy typically produce solitary, cup-shaped yellow flowers that float on the water's surface or are held slightly above it. The flowers have multiple petals and a prominent central seed pod.
  • Habitat: These plants are commonly found in slow-moving or stagnant freshwater habitats such as lakes, ponds, rivers, and ditches. They thrive in areas with muddy bottoms and full to partial sunlight.
  • Ecological Role: Grążawy provide important habitat and food sources for various aquatic organisms, including fish, amphibians, insects, and waterfowl. The leaves offer shade and shelter, while the rhizomes and seeds serve as food.
  • Similar Species: Grążawy are often confused with other water lilies, particularly those in the genus Nymphaea. However, Nuphar species generally have smaller, less showy flowers and thicker rhizomes.
