Censor (2021 film)
Censor is a 2021 British psychological horror film directed by Prano Bailey-Bond, in her feature directorial debut. The film stars Niamh Algar, Michael Smiley, Vincent Franklin, Sophia La Porta, and Nicholas Burns. Set in 1985, it follows Enid Baines (Algar), a film censor working for the British Board of Film Classification who begins to unravel after viewing a disturbing film that triggers repressed memories of her sister's disappearance.
The film explores themes of trauma, guilt, censorship, and the perceived link between onscreen violence and real-world behavior. It is a meta-horror film, playing with genre tropes and blurring the lines between reality and fiction, reflecting the protagonist's increasingly fractured mental state. Censor received its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and was generally well-received, particularly for its atmosphere, visual style, and Algar's performance.
