Hu Kexian
Hu Kexian (胡克顯, also written as 胡克显) was a Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) Chinese military general who served during the reign of the Wanli Emperor (r. 1572-1620). He is primarily known for his role in defending Pyongyang during the Imjin War (1592-1598), also known as the Japanese Invasions of Korea.
During the Imjin War, Hu Kexian was dispatched to Korea as part of the Ming Dynasty's military intervention to aid the Joseon Dynasty against the invading Japanese forces led by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He commanded troops in the defense of Pyongyang, a strategically important city. While the initial defense proved challenging, ultimately, under the overall command of generals like Li Rusong, Ming forces, including those under Hu Kexian, successfully recaptured Pyongyang in 1593.
Accounts vary concerning the specifics of Hu Kexian’s contribution and actions during the recapture of Pyongyang, but historical records confirm his presence and involvement in the battle. Following the recapture of Pyongyang, he continued to participate in subsequent campaigns against the Japanese forces in Korea.
Details regarding Hu Kexian's early life, prior military service, and post-war activities are less extensively documented compared to his involvement in the Imjin War.
