HMS Hero (H99)

HMS Hero (H99) was an H-class destroyer of the Royal Navy. Built by Vickers-Armstrongs on the Tyne, she was launched on 6 June 1936 and commissioned on 21 October 1936.

Hero served primarily in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theatres during the Second World War. Initially deployed with the Home Fleet, she participated in patrols and escort duties. She was involved in the Norwegian Campaign in 1940, escorting convoys and providing fire support.

Later in the war, Hero served extensively in the Mediterranean, participating in operations such as the evacuation of Greece in 1941 and escorting vital convoys to Malta. She also took part in the Allied landings in North Africa (Operation Torch) in 1942 and the invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky) in 1943.

After the war, Hero was sold to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1945 and renamed HMCS Chaudiere. She served in the Canadian Navy until 1963, when she was scrapped. Throughout her career in both the Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy, Hero/ Chaudiere received numerous battle honours for her service in crucial theaters of the Second World War.
