The Pinnacles (Western Australia)
The Pinnacles are a natural feature located within Nambung National Park in Western Australia. They are thousands of limestone formations rising from the yellow sand landscape. The Pinnacles were formed from seashells dating back millions of years. Leaching of calcium carbonate from the sand and subsequent concretion created the pillar-like structures.
Nambung National Park, and therefore The Pinnacles, are located near the town of Cervantes, approximately 200 kilometers north of Perth. The area is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its unique geological landscape and the opportunity for stargazing due to low light pollution.
The height of the Pinnacles varies, with some reaching up to 3.5 meters. Their color changes depending on the time of day and the angle of the sun, providing a dramatic and visually interesting spectacle.
The area's ecosystem also supports native flora and fauna, although the focus is generally on the geological features. Interpretive displays are available within the park to explain the formation and ecological significance of The Pinnacles and the surrounding area.
