Tasuki (sash)

A tasuki (襷) is a narrow cloth sash used in Japan to hold up the sleeves of a kimono or other traditional garment, preventing them from getting in the way during work or activity. It is typically made of cotton or other durable fabric.

The tasuki is worn by looping it around the back of the neck, then crossing it over the chest to secure the sleeves. The ends are then tied together in the back. The placement and tightness can be adjusted for comfort and to effectively hold the sleeves in place.

While primarily functional, the tasuki can also have aesthetic aspects, with various colors and patterns available. It is often seen in depictions of traditional crafts, farming, and other activities where freedom of arm movement is required while wearing a kimono or yukata. It can be worn by both men and women. Beyond practical use, certain colors or styles might be associated with specific occupations or activities.
