Darmera

Darmera is a genus of flowering plants in the family Saxifragaceae, containing only one species, Darmera peltata, commonly known as the umbrella plant or Indian rhubarb. It is a herbaceous perennial native to the coastal mountains of northern California and southwestern Oregon.

The plant is characterized by its large, peltate (umbrella-like) leaves that can reach up to 60 cm (24 inches) in diameter. The leaves are deeply lobed and have toothed edges. Before the leaves emerge in spring, clusters of pink flowers appear on tall, leafless stalks.

Darmera thrives in moist, shady locations, often near streams or ponds. Its rhizomatous root system allows it to spread and form colonies. It is commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant in gardens, valued for its bold foliage and early spring blooms.

The genus name Darmera honors Karl Darmer, a German botanist. The specific epithet peltata refers to the peltate shape of the leaves.

Darmera is relatively easy to grow in suitable conditions, requiring consistently moist soil and protection from intense sunlight. It can be propagated by division of the rhizomes in spring or autumn.
