Stony Island (Michigan)

Stony Island is a small island located in the Detroit River, within the city of Grosse Ile, Michigan. It is situated near the southern tip of Grosse Ile, close to the mouth of the Detroit River as it enters Lake Erie.

The island is primarily known for its historical significance related to the limestone quarrying industry. From the late 19th century through much of the 20th century, Stony Island was a major source of limestone. The limestone was used in various industries, including the production of steel, cement, and road construction materials. The extensive quarrying operations significantly altered the island's original topography.

Ownership of Stony Island has been a subject of legal and environmental concerns over the years, with disputes arising related to land rights, mineral rights, and environmental remediation efforts stemming from the former quarrying operations. Parts of the island have been considered for various development projects, but these have often been met with resistance due to the island's unique ecological environment and historical importance.

The island is characterized by exposed rock formations, remnants of the quarrying activities, and pockets of vegetation that have re-established themselves since the cessation of quarrying. Access to Stony Island is restricted. The island is sometimes referred to in discussions surrounding the Detroit River ecosystem and ongoing efforts to restore and protect the area's natural resources.
