Bob Dole

Bob Dole (1923-2021) was an American politician and lawyer who represented Kansas in the United States Senate for 27 years. He served as Senate Majority Leader during the mid-1980s and 1990s. Dole was the Republican Party's nominee for President of the United States in 1996, losing to incumbent Bill Clinton. He also served as the Republican Party's nominee for Vice President in 1976, on a ticket with Gerald Ford, which lost to Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale.

Dole was born in Russell, Kansas, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was severely wounded. He received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster for his service. After the war, he earned law degrees from Washburn University.

He began his political career in the Kansas House of Representatives (1951-1953) and the U.S. House of Representatives (1961-1969). In the Senate, he was known for his pragmatic approach and ability to work across the aisle, as well as his expertise in agriculture and budget issues. He was a strong advocate for people with disabilities, particularly after his own wartime injuries.

Following his political career, Dole remained active in public life, often appearing on television and commenting on political events. He was also involved in various charitable and philanthropic activities. He is remembered for his long and distinguished career in public service.
