Shelter Island (Western Australia)
Shelter Island is a small island located in the Recherche Archipelago off the south coast of Western Australia. It lies approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) southeast of Esperance.
The island is part of the Recherche Archipelago Nature Reserve, managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) of Western Australia. This management ensures the protection of the island's natural environment and biodiversity. Access to the island is often restricted to preserve its fragile ecosystem.
Shelter Island, like other islands in the Recherche Archipelago, is primarily composed of granite. It supports a variety of flora and fauna typical of the region, including seabirds, reptiles, and unique plant communities adapted to the harsh coastal environment. The surrounding waters are known for their marine life, including seals, dolphins, and various fish species.
The island's name, "Shelter Island," likely refers to its ability to provide protection from the prevailing winds and swells of the Southern Ocean, offering a safe anchorage for vessels.
