Piggy (Merrie Melodies)

Piggy was a recurring, anthropomorphic pig character appearing in Warner Bros.' Merrie Melodies cartoon series during the 1930s. Often appearing alongside characters such as Porky Pig and Petunia Pig (to whom he was sometimes, but not always, related), Piggy was typically portrayed as a somewhat naive and excitable individual, often acting as a foil to the more grounded Porky. He was frequently used for comedic relief, getting into trouble or reacting in exaggerated ways to the situations around him.

Piggy's design and personality varied slightly across different shorts. While always recognizable as a pig, his appearance could range from slightly more realistic to highly caricatured. His roles also differed, sometimes being a close friend, sometimes a relative, and sometimes simply an incidental character who interacted with Porky.

The character faded in prominence in the late 1930s, with Porky Pig becoming the dominant star of the Warner Bros. cartoon lineup. Piggy made fewer and fewer appearances, eventually being retired as a regular character. Despite his relatively brief tenure, Piggy remains a recognizable character from the early days of the Merrie Melodies series, representing the evolving style and character development of Warner Bros. animation during that period.
