Jonathan Powell (producer)
Jonathan Powell (born c. 1947) is a British television producer and executive, primarily known for his work at the BBC, where he held several senior positions.
Powell began his career in the BBC's Script Department in the 1960s. He rose through the ranks to become Head of Drama Serials in 1982, and subsequently Head of Drama Group in 1985, a position he held until 1989. As Head of Drama, he oversaw the production of many acclaimed and popular serials, mini-series, and single dramas, significantly impacting the landscape of British television drama.
Some of the notable productions overseen during his tenure at the BBC include adaptations of classic novels such as "Bleak House," "Middlemarch," and "The Barchester Chronicles," as well as original dramas such as "Edge of Darkness." He is credited with championing writers and directors who went on to become significant figures in British television and film.
After leaving the BBC in 1989, Powell established his own independent production company, Jonathan Powell Productions, where he continued to produce high-quality television drama for various broadcasters. He has also worked as a consultant to other production companies and broadcasters.
