SM U-85
SM U-85 was a German Type VIIB U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. She was commissioned on May 31, 1941, and was commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Eberhard Greger for her entire career.
U-85 conducted five patrols, sinking two ships and damaging one. She was sunk on August 28, 1942, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina by gunfire and depth charges from the U.S. Coast Guard cutter USCGC Icarus. All 46 members of her crew were lost.
Her sinking was significant as she was one of the first U-boats to be sunk in American waters during the war, marking an escalation of the Battle of the Atlantic closer to the United States. The wreck of U-85 lies at a depth of approximately 90 feet and is a popular dive site, although it is also considered a war grave.
