Kulusuk

Kulusuk is a small settlement located on an island of the same name in the Sermersooq municipality of southeastern Greenland. The island itself sits just off the coast of the larger Ammassalik Island.

Kulusuk is notable for being the site of Greenland's easternmost airport, Kulusuk Airport (GGS), which serves as a crucial transportation hub for access to the Ammassalik region and surrounding settlements, including the larger town of Tasiilaq. Due to the challenging terrain and limited road infrastructure in East Greenland, air travel is often the only practical means of transport.

The settlement is home to a small population, primarily Inuit, who maintain a traditional lifestyle centered around hunting, fishing, and tourism. In recent years, tourism has become an increasingly important part of the local economy, with visitors drawn to the area's dramatic landscapes, glaciers, and opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking.

The culture of Kulusuk is deeply rooted in Inuit traditions, with a strong emphasis on storytelling, handicrafts, and a connection to the natural environment. The local museum provides insights into the history and culture of the region. The community faces challenges related to climate change, which is impacting traditional hunting practices and the stability of the ice.
