Sevron
Sevron is a fictional symbol, often depicted as a chevron-shaped or interlocking chevron design, primarily associated with the science fiction television series Stargate SG-1 and its associated franchise. In the Stargate universe, a sevron represents one digit of an address used to dial a Stargate, allowing for instantaneous travel across vast distances to other Stargates located on other planets.
Each Stargate has a dial called a DHD (Dial-Home Device). The DHD features symbols corresponding to the planetary addresses. A seven-symbol address (six points of origin and one point of embarkation) is required to establish a stable wormhole connection to another Stargate in the Milky Way galaxy. An eight-symbol address is needed for intergalactic travel, and a nine-symbol address is introduced in later series for even longer distances.
The term "sevron" is not typically used outside the context of the Stargate franchise. Within the fictional context, it serves as a critical piece of the Stargate technology and the mechanism of interstellar travel. The engaging of a sevron, usually indicated by an audible "click" and visual confirmation on the Stargate's ring, confirms that the symbol has been locked and correctly entered into the dialing sequence.
