Michael Gilkes (writer)
Michael Gilkes (born in Guyana) was a Caribbean writer, academic, and playwright known for his contributions to Caribbean literature and dramatic arts. He held a Ph.D. in Literature from the University of Kent, Canterbury, and taught at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus, Barbados.
Gilkes's works often explored themes of Caribbean identity, history, and the lasting impacts of colonialism. He wrote both fiction and non-fiction, including critical analyses of Caribbean literature and culture. His plays were frequently performed in the Caribbean and elsewhere. His novel, The Village and the Master, is a notable work that delves into the complexities of post-colonial Caribbean society. He also published extensively on the works of Wilson Harris. He died in 2020.
