Broadgate

Broadgate is a large, mixed-use office and retail estate in the City of London, located to the north of Liverpool Street station. It is built on land that was previously railway sidings belonging to Broad Street railway station.

History:

The development was undertaken in the 1980s by Rosehaugh Stanhope Developments, designed by Arup Associates, and built by Bovis Construction. It was conceived as a modern office complex to attract financial institutions. The development's architecture is characterized by its large, open spaces and use of glass and steel. The first phase opened in 1986.

Features:

Broadgate comprises several office buildings, shops, restaurants, and public spaces. A notable feature is Broadgate Circle, a large amphitheater used for events and performances. The estate is also known for its public art collection, including sculptures by Fernando Botero and Barry Flanagan.

Location and Transport:

Broadgate is situated adjacent to Liverpool Street station, providing direct access to national rail services, the London Underground (Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines), and the Elizabeth line. Its central location makes it a prominent business address in London.

Ownership:

The ownership of Broadgate has changed hands several times over the years. As of 2024, it is owned by British Land and GIC.

Significance:

Broadgate played a significant role in the redevelopment of the City of London during the 1980s and 1990s, attracting major financial institutions and contributing to the area's economic growth. It remains a prominent business district and a notable example of urban regeneration.
