1977 U.S. Open (golf)
The 1977 U.S. Open was the 77th U.S. Open, held June 16-19 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hubert Green won his first major championship, one stroke ahead of runner-up Lou Graham.
Green led after each of the first three rounds. During the final round, Green received a death threat, delivered via a note by a spectator. He was informed of the threat on the 15th tee and, after a short delay, finished the hole. As a result, he hurried through the final four holes to finish the round before anything could happen, famously using a quick pre-shot routine.
The tournament was notable for the challenging conditions and the high scores relative to par. Several top players struggled, including Jack Nicklaus, who missed the cut. The course was set up to be extremely difficult, with thick rough and fast greens.
This was the third U.S. Open held at Southern Hills, following the 1958 and 1970 editions.
