Yusupov

Yusupov is a surname of Turkic origin, historically associated with a prominent Russian noble family.

The Yusupov family (also transliterated as Youssoupoff) claimed descent from Yusuf Murza, a Nogai Horde leader who entered Russian service in the 16th century. The family rose to become one of the wealthiest and most influential in Imperial Russia. They owned vast estates, art collections, and were closely connected to the Imperial court.

Key members of the Yusupov family include:

  • Prince Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov (1750-1831): A prominent art collector, diplomat, and statesman during the reign of Catherine the Great and subsequent Tsars.

  • Prince Felix Felixovich Yusupov (1887-1967): Best known for his role in the assassination of Grigori Rasputin. He was married to Princess Irina Alexandrovna, a niece of Tsar Nicholas II.

After the Russian Revolution, the Yusupov family emigrated to Europe. The name continues to exist among descendants of the family. The Yusupovs are notable for their immense wealth, their patronage of the arts, and their involvement in significant historical events of the late Imperial Russian period.
