Robert Spitzer (priest)

Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D., is an American Jesuit priest, philosopher, educator, author, and speaker. He is known for his work in metaphysics, philosophy of science, ethics, and his defenses of traditional Christian teachings in light of modern science.

Spitzer holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from The Catholic University of America and a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in Philosophy from Gonzaga University. He also holds degrees in Accounting and Business Administration.

He served as the President of Gonzaga University from 1998 to 2009. During his tenure, he focused on improving the academic rigor and reputation of the university while emphasizing its Jesuit mission.

Following his presidency at Gonzaga, Spitzer founded the Magis Center of Reason and Faith, a non-profit organization dedicated to exploring the intersection of faith and reason. Through the Magis Center, he has produced various books, articles, and multimedia resources aimed at demonstrating the rationality of belief in God and the compatibility of science and religion. He is particularly known for his arguments against philosophical materialism and his advocacy for the existence of objective moral truths.

Spitzer is a frequent lecturer and speaker, addressing audiences on topics such as science and faith, ethics, and the nature of reality. He has also participated in numerous debates and discussions on these topics.
