National Democratic Union (Greece)

The National Democratic Union (Ethniki Dimokratiki Enosis - EDE) was a Greek political alliance formed in 1936, prior to the establishment of the Metaxas dictatorship. It was a broad coalition primarily comprised of liberal, centrist, and some royalist elements opposed to the perceived rise of communist influence and the political instability of the time. Key figures associated with the alliance included Ioannis Rallis and Themistoklis Sophoulis, though their participation and leadership varied over time.

EDE was not a tightly unified party with a specific platform but rather a grouping of diverse political personalities brought together by common concerns. Its main objective was to ensure political stability and prevent a perceived threat from the left-wing parties, especially the Communist Party of Greece (KKE).

Following the declaration of the Metaxas dictatorship in August 1936, EDE, like all other political parties, was effectively dissolved. The members dispersed and their political activities were suppressed under the authoritarian regime. The legacy of EDE is primarily significant as a reflection of the volatile political climate of interwar Greece and the widespread anxieties surrounding the growth of communism. While not a long-lasting or particularly impactful organization in itself, its formation highlights the polarized political landscape that ultimately contributed to the establishment of the dictatorship.
