XIX Corps (United States)

XIX Corps was a corps of the United States Army that served during World War II. It was activated on January 15, 1943, and deactivated on October 10, 1945.

World War II Service:

XIX Corps was part of the Third United States Army under the command of General George S. Patton. It participated in the Western Allied invasion of Germany, landing in Normandy in June 1944 following the initial D-Day landings. The corps played a key role in the breakout from Normandy, the rapid advance across France, and the subsequent fighting in Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany.

XIX Corps was involved in major engagements, including the Battle of Saint-Lô, the Falaise Pocket, the Siegfried Line campaign, and the Battle of the Bulge (although its involvement in the Bulge was indirect, as it provided support to units directly engaged). It also participated in the crossing of the Rhine River and the final push into central Germany.

The corps was known for its aggressive and mobile warfare tactics, reflecting the command style of General Patton. It liberated numerous towns and cities and contributed significantly to the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Commanders:

  • Major General Charles H. Corlett (January 1943 – July 1945)
  • Major General Gilbert R. Cook (July 1945 – October 1945)

  • 2nd Armored Division
  • 29th Infantry Division
  • 30th Infantry Division
  • 79th Infantry Division
  • 95th Infantry Division

Post-War:

Following the end of World War II in Europe, XIX Corps participated in occupation duties in Germany until its deactivation in October 1945.
