Kept Man

A "kept man" is a man who is financially supported by a romantic partner, typically a woman, in exchange for companionship, sex, and/or domestic services. This financial support often includes housing, food, clothing, entertainment, and other living expenses.

The term carries a negative connotation, implying a reversal of traditional gender roles and often suggesting that the man lacks ambition or independence. It can also imply a transactional nature to the relationship, suggesting that the man's affection or loyalty is conditional upon the continuation of financial support.

The role of a "kept man" is distinct from that of a househusband, who typically manages the household and childcare responsibilities while the other partner works. While a kept man may perform some household tasks, the primary expectation is not necessarily domestic labour, but rather companionship and fulfilling the emotional or physical needs of the supporting partner. The core defining characteristic is financial dependency coupled with a romantic or sexual relationship.

The social acceptability and prevalence of "kept men" relationships vary across cultures and time periods. Societal views are often influenced by prevailing attitudes towards gender roles, financial independence, and relationship dynamics.
