Battle of Grozny (March 1996)

The Battle of Grozny (March 1996) was a significant engagement during the First Chechen War. It represented a recapture of the Chechen capital, Grozny, by Chechen separatist forces from the Russian Federation.

Following the initial Russian seizure of Grozny in early 1995, Chechen fighters had largely withdrawn to the mountains and surrounding areas. However, a substantial number of insurgents remained embedded within the city, waging a guerrilla war against the occupying Russian forces.

In March 1996, Chechen fighters, led by commanders like Shamil Basayev and Ruslan Gelayev, launched a coordinated offensive to retake Grozny. The attack caught the Russian forces by surprise. Using their familiarity with the city, extensive tunnel networks, and tactics honed through months of fighting, the Chechen forces quickly overwhelmed many Russian positions.

Heavy fighting ensued throughout the city. The Russian forces, hampered by poor coordination and low morale, struggled to contain the Chechen offensive. Many Russian soldiers were trapped in isolated garrisons, and resupply became difficult.

The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, but ultimately, the Chechen forces were successful in regaining control of large parts of Grozny. The Russian command, facing heavy losses and mounting political pressure, eventually agreed to a ceasefire and withdrew its forces from the city center.

The recapture of Grozny was a major victory for the Chechen separatists and a significant blow to Russian morale. It demonstrated the resilience and determination of the Chechen resistance and contributed to the eventual ceasefire and withdrawal of Russian forces later in 1996. Although the ceasefire was temporary, the Battle of Grozny (March 1996) played a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the First Chechen War.
