VP-40 (1951–present)
VP-40 is a United States Navy patrol squadron, originally established as Patrol Squadron Forty (VP-40) on September 4, 1951, and has maintained continuous service since that date. The squadron is a maritime patrol and reconnaissance squadron, specializing in anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), and search and rescue (SAR) operations. VP-40 has been based at various locations throughout its history, including Naval Air Station (NAS) Kodiak, Alaska and NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, before its current home at NAS Jacksonville, Florida.
Throughout its operational history, VP-40 has flown a variety of aircraft, including the P2V Neptune, P-3 Orion, and currently the P-8A Poseidon. The squadron has participated in numerous Cold War operations, maritime interdiction operations, and deployments in support of various national security objectives around the globe. VP-40 has earned numerous awards and commendations for its service, reflecting its commitment to excellence and its vital role in naval aviation. The squadron is a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS), meaning it trains aircrew and maintenance personnel on the P-8A Poseidon. VP-40 prepares these personnel to deploy and execute missions worldwide.
