Lavabo

A lavabo is a washbasin, particularly one fixed to a wall. The term is derived from the Latin word lavare, meaning "to wash." Historically, and in some contemporary usage, it specifically refers to a basin used for ritual handwashing in religious settings, particularly in Christian churches and monasteries.

In ecclesiastical contexts, a lavabo is typically located near the altar or sacristy and is used by the priest or other ministers to wash their hands before Mass or other liturgical services. The act of washing symbolizes purification and is intended to cleanse the hands physically and spiritually before participating in the sacred rites.

Beyond its religious connotations, "lavabo" can also refer to any type of washbasin, especially a smaller one found in a bathroom or utility room. However, in modern secular usage, "sink" or "washbasin" are more common terms. The term "lavabo" is often considered archaic or formal outside of religious circles.
