Fujiwara no Kinshi (Go-Shirakawa)
Fujiwara no Kinshi (藤原忻子) (1157 – August 17, 1228) was a Japanese empress consort (chūgū) of Emperor Go-Shirakawa of Japan. She was also known as Empress Kenshunmon-in (建春門院).
Kinshi was a daughter of Fujiwara no Narichika, a prominent courtier who was later exiled and executed during the Shishigatani Incident. Despite her father's disgrace, Kinshi's lineage and connections within the Fujiwara clan allowed her to become consort to Emperor Go-Shirakawa. The details of her early life and how she navigated the political ramifications of her father's downfall are somewhat obscure in historical records.
She entered the imperial court and became the empress consort of Emperor Go-Shirakawa in 1172. She was given the title Chūgū (中宮). As empress, she played a role in court ceremonies and the imperial household, though the specific nature and extent of her influence are difficult to ascertain given the historical context. Go-Shirakawa already had several consorts and children before Kinshi.
After Go-Shirakawa's death in 1192, Kinshi took the title Kenshunmon-in as an honorary title indicating her status as a retired empress affiliated with the Kenshun Gate of the Imperial Palace. She lived a long life, surviving both Emperor Go-Shirakawa and the turmoil of the Genpei War and the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate. She died in 1228 at the age of 71.
