Elizabeth City (Virginia Company)

Elizabeth City was one of the four original incorporations, or "citties," established in the Virginia Colony by the Virginia Company of London in 1619. These incorporations were administrative divisions created to facilitate governance and development of the burgeoning colony.

As a "cittie," Elizabeth City held some degree of autonomy and representation within the larger colony. Its boundaries encompassed a significant portion of land, primarily located along the lower reaches of the James River and the Chesapeake Bay. Its purpose was to organize settlement, agriculture, and defense within its designated territory.

The creation of Elizabeth City, along with the other three citties (James City, Henrico, and Charles City), marked a significant step towards a more structured and organized form of colonial government. It represented an attempt by the Virginia Company to exert greater control and encourage further investment and settlement in Virginia. The initial populations were relatively small, concentrated around established settlements and plantations.

Over time, Elizabeth City evolved, eventually becoming what is now Elizabeth City County. Later, in 1952, Elizabeth City County and the town of Phoebus were consolidated with the independent city of Hampton, Virginia, effectively dissolving Elizabeth City County as a political entity. However, the name "Elizabeth City" remains a significant historical marker in the region, reminding us of the early organization and governance structures of the Virginia Colony. The area encompassing the former Elizabeth City contributes greatly to the present-day City of Hampton's rich historical heritage.
