WENN (AM)
WENN (AM) was a daytime-only AM radio station licensed to serve Bessemer, Alabama, United States. It operated on a frequency of 1320 kHz with a power of 5,000 watts.
The station was owned by several entities throughout its history, including the Birmingham News Company, which also owned television station WAPI-TV and radio station WAPI-AM-FM in Birmingham. At various points in its history, WENN (AM) featured a predominantly African American-oriented programming format, including rhythm and blues, gospel music, and news geared toward the Black community.
The call letters WENN stood for "Where Everyone is Near and Neighborly." WENN was a highly influential station in the Birmingham area, particularly during the Civil Rights Movement. Its programming provided a voice and platform for the Black community during a period of significant social and political change.
The station's license was cancelled by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2015 after being silent for more than a year, ending its decades-long broadcast history.
