Embryonic (album)
Embryonic is the fourteenth studio album by the American rock band The Flaming Lips, released in 2009. It marks a return to a more experimental and psychedelic sound for the band, eschewing the more polished production of their previous albums, At War with the Mystics and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.
The album is characterized by its dense, layered sound, featuring heavy use of distortion, feedback, and unconventional instrumentation. Many songs are structured around lengthy instrumental passages and improvisational jams. Vocally, Embryonic features both lead singer Wayne Coyne and guitarist Steven Drozd taking on prominent roles.
Embryonic is a double album, comprising eighteen tracks. Guest musicians include Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and MGMT. The album received generally positive reviews upon release, with critics praising its ambition and adventurousness, while some found its challenging soundscape difficult to penetrate. The album spawned several singles, including "Silver Trembling Hands" and "I Can Be a Frog".
