Holos (political party)
Holos (Ukrainian: Голос, meaning "Voice") is a liberal political party in Ukraine. It was founded in May 2019 by Ukrainian musician Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, prior to the 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election.
History and Ideology
Holos's platform has been generally pro-European and reformist. Key policy objectives have included strengthening the rule of law, promoting economic liberalization, combating corruption, and fostering greater integration with the European Union. The party advocates for increased transparency and accountability in government, and supports measures to decentralize power. Vakarchuk emphasized the need for new faces in politics and criticized established political elites. Holos also supports Ukraine's membership in both the European Union and NATO.
Electoral Performance
In the 2019 parliamentary election, Holos won 5.82% of the national vote, securing 17 seats via party-list proportional representation and 3 constituency seats, for a total of 20 seats in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's parliament). Following the election, Vakarchuk resigned as party leader, citing a need to focus on his personal development. In subsequent local elections, the party’s performance varied.
Leadership and Structure
Following Vakarchuk's departure, the leadership of Holos has changed hands several times. Kira Rudik has served as a prominent figure and leader of the party in the Verkhovna Rada. The party structure includes a political council and regional organizations.
Current Status
Holos continues to operate as a political party in Ukraine, albeit with fluctuating levels of public support. Its focus remains on promoting reform and good governance. The party’s future electoral prospects are dependent on its ability to adapt to the evolving political landscape and address the pressing challenges facing Ukraine.
