Baegaksan
Baegaksan (백악산), also known as Bukaksan (북악산), is a mountain located in Seoul, South Korea. It is part of the Bukhansan National Park and forms the northern boundary of the historic city center. Historically and culturally significant, Baegaksan served as a crucial defensive point for Seoul, particularly during the Joseon Dynasty.
Baegaksan is characterized by its rugged granite peaks and forested slopes. The mountain offers hiking trails that provide scenic views of the city and surrounding landscape. Access to certain areas of Baegaksan was restricted for many years due to its proximity to the Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae), the presidential residence. However, access has been gradually expanded to the public in recent years, subject to certain regulations and reservations.
The mountain is a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking outdoor recreation and historical exploration. Its trails connect to other peaks within Bukhansan National Park, providing opportunities for longer hikes. The area is also rich in historical sites, including remnants of the Seoul Fortress Wall, which winds along the mountain's ridge. Baegaksan's name translates roughly to "White Rock Mountain," referring to the prominent white granite formations found on its slopes.
