Ron Arad (industrial designer)

Ron Arad (born 24 April 1951) is an Israeli-born British industrial designer, artist, and architect. He is known for his experimental approach to materials and radical re-conceptions of form and function.

Arad studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem before moving to London in 1973 to study architecture at the Architectural Association. He co-founded the design and production studio One Off Ltd with Caroline Thorman in 1981.

Arad's work spans furniture design, architectural projects, and sculptural installations. He often utilizes steel, aluminum, and polymers, pushing the boundaries of their capabilities through innovative techniques. Notable pieces include the Rover Chair (1981), the Well Tempered Chair (1986), and the Bookworm bookshelf (1993).

He has designed for numerous international brands, including Kartell, Vitra, Alessi, and Magis. Arad's architectural projects include the Holon Design Museum in Israel (opened 2010) and the Yohji Yamamoto flagship store in Tokyo.

Arad has taught design at various institutions, including the Royal College of Art in London, where he was Professor of Design from 1997 to 2009. His work is held in the permanent collections of major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He is a recipient of numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to design.
